Mattias Desmet is a very clever man and most of his ideas and theories are excellent - but I believe that he needs to rethink chapter 8 of his new book.
He seems to have a blind spot in his reasoning which does not allow him to apportion blame correctly to perpetrators of evil or wrongdoers.
We must not blame the victims for the perpetrator’s wrongdoing.
It is true that most people have the ability to do evil or do wrong - that is free will - but they also know the difference between them. They have a choice.
The majority of humans are capable of knowing the difference between what is ethically right or wrong and choosing not to do wrong.
But as Mattias knows full well a certain percentage of the population have aberrant psychology which allows them to choose evil over good/wrong instead of right. Psychopaths, Sociopaths, Narcissists are variants in the human population – most have no ability to feel empathy and have a pathological belief in their own Superiority and the Inferiority of others.
They seek power and control over others and seek to manipulate them.
They are also capable of great cruelty and murder - even genocide and it will be without remorse.
They are wired differently to the majority of humans.
Their insatiable and pathological needs are detrimental to others and to a healthy functioning society.
Many of these Psychological variants attract others to them (satellites) because they are usually
extremely charming, persuasive and manipulative and many reach positions of great wealth, Power and Control in society (by any means necessary).
The majority of society are not responsible for Psychopaths or their actions.
It is not society’s wrong thinking that creates them or sustains them.
Most Psychopaths are born that way and choose to indulge and develop their psychopathy.
It is not wrong-think or character weakness in human society or fanatical conspiracy theorists that create Psychopathic leaders, Cabals and Corporations - they have always existed.
It is the rise of Technology that has given them more means of power and control and allowed them to gather together in larger numbers. Which increases their visibility and influence.
Technology has facilitated their drive towards their ultimate goals of total power, control and ability to manipulate the world.
